  5.     There has been an occasional problem with disks that have a non
  6. compatible MS-DOS format.  A disk or partition formatted with
  7. compatible versions of MS-DOS will have a table called a BIOS PARAMETER
  8. BLOCK (BPB) at offset Bh (11 decimal) of its first sector (boot sector). 
  9. The format in question locates its BPB at offset 3 of the first sector. 
  10. The BPB contains a field called a media byte which the system uses to
  11. determine how a drive has been formatted and what type of disk it is.  
  12. Earlier MS-DOS versions could use an alternate method of determining
  13. media type and could read this disk.

  15. Current  ZENITH  MS-DOS versions -- 3.20 and 3.21 cannot read such 
  16. disks  Any attempt to do so will disable the floppy drive until the
  17. system is rebooted.

  19. If you have a disk that you can read under some versions of MS-DOS  but
  20. not under MS-DOS 3.2 or MS-DOS 3.21, the following solutions are
  21. suggested:

  23. METHOD 1:
  24.  
  25. Format a disk with your ZENITH operating system and FORMAT utility. 
  26. Transport the problematic disk to the system that is able to read it
  27. (or boot an MS-DOS version  that  is able to read it) and use the copy
  28. command to copy desired files to the ZENITH formatted disk.

  31. METHOD 2:
  32.  
  33. A program called FIXBOOT is available for download (DOWNLOAD  SPECIAL 
  34. FILES section of the main bulletin board menu -- requires XMODEM 
  35. protocol).  FIXBOOT is a utility designed to replace the boot sector on
  36. a 9 sector/track, 40 track, double sided 360k diskette.  It is useful
  37. in situations where the target  diskette's  boot sector has been
  38. damaged or erased, or in the above described situation.

  40. FIXBOOT can be run from either a floppy drive or a hard disk.  It is
  41. invoked by typing "D:FIXBOOT <CR>",  where 'D:' is an optional drive  
  42. letter specification.

  44. FIXBOOT will prompt the user for the drive in which the target diskette 
  45. will be placed.  It will then ask the user to ensure that the target
  46. diskette is indeed in the target drive.  Once the user has indicated
  47. readiness by pressing a key, FIXBOOT will attempt to replace the boot
  48. sector on the target diskette.

  50. A message will be output to the console indicating whether or not the 
  51. boot sector replacement was successful and asking the user to press any
  52. key to exit the utility.
